Most people assume BOTOX and cosmetic fillers are only for women who want to rejuvenate their skin and recapture their youthful looks. But what they might not know is these treatments are just as useful for men, too.
BOTOX and similar products like Dysport and Xeomin are medicines injected into the skin to improve wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the facial muscles that cause the wrinkles. Men often get these injections to eliminate crow’s feet around the eyes, frown lines between the eyes, laugh lines, and forehead wrinkles, CEENTA facial plastic specialist Jewel Greywoode, MD, said.
Cosmetic fillers are substances like hyaluronic acid that are found naturally in the skin, injected to restore volume and suppleness. They can help reduce smile lines, creases, and chin wrinkles.
Men and women do have some anatomical differences in the makeup of their face. Specifically, men’s muscles are larger, and they usually have more prominent jawlines and chins. They also have higher, wider foreheads, while their eyebrows arch less. Men’s eyes are also proportionately smaller than women’s. Finally, men’s wrinkles are usually deeper than women’s.
What does this mean for treatment? Well, men sometimes need more BOTOX than women for the same results because they have larger muscles. Also, because men have less fat in their faces, and have more pronounced jawlines, if they get cosmetic injections they should focus on their jawline and under their eyes instead of on their lips and cheeks.
These treatments work identically, and for the same amount of time, in both men and women, provided compensation is made for the differences in their anatomical structures.
