Pollen on car that needs to be cleaned during the spring

By now, you’ve probably seen countless pictures of cars caked in pollen—and you may have experienced it yourself. That familiar yellow coating isn’t just an eyesore on vehicles or patio furniture; it can also be a major trigger for seasonal allergies and constant sneezing.

The good news is that cleaning pollen properly can help reduce spring allergy symptoms. However, there are a few important precautions to keep in mind.

Wear proper attire

Before cleaning pollen outdoors, wearing the right clothing can significantly limit exposure. Consider the following:

  • A face mask
  • Vinyl clothing or fabrics that are not wool or cotton
  • Long sleeves
  • Gloves

These barriers help prevent pollen from coming into contact with your skin and airways.

Use allergy medication ahead of time

You can take a proactive approach to allergy relief by using over-the-counter medication before starting outdoor chores. Dr. Roy Lewis, an otolaryngologist at CEENTA Mooresville, recommends a mast cell stabilizer such as NasalCrom.

“It needs to be taken 20 minutes before you start cleaning, not after,” Dr. Lewis says. “It can be taken up to four times a day.”

Change and wash your clothes after cleaning

Pollen can cling to clothing and shoes long after you finish cleaning, making it easy to track allergens indoors. To reduce continued exposure:

  • Change into a fresh set of clothes immediately
  • Wash worn clothes in hot water

This step helps minimize pollen buildup inside your home.

Rinse your nose after cleaning

Even with precautions, airborne pollen may still enter your nasal passages. Isaac Dingle, MD, of CEENTA Pineville, recommends nasal irrigation.

“Use a saline rinse, such as a Neti pot, to irrigate your nose,” Dr. Dingle explains. “After that, a corticosteroid like Flonase can help.”

What do you do if you still have allergy symptoms?

Because pollen exposure isn’t completely avoidable, managing allergies at the medical level may be your best option. At CEENTA, our board-certified ENT physicians provide year-round allergy testing and offer multiple immunotherapy options designed for long-term relief.
