Transcript of the Interview

Laura Palka: The Daily Two is brought to you by Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates. Welcome to the Daily Two. Well, LASIK surgery has come a long way over the years, and it remains one of the most popular forms of vision correction. Joining us today is Dr. Lee Wiley. Lee, thanks for being here today. So full disclosure, I had it 25 years ago. I love it! But explain to our viewers what is LASIK if they don't know.

Dr. Lee Wiley: It's a gentle resculpting of the surface of the cornea with a laser to help apply your glasses prescription to your eye, so you don't need to use them anymore.

Laura: Is everyone a candidate?

Dr. Wiley: You're a candidate if you want to get out of your contacts or glasses.

Laura: Yeah.

Dr. Wiley: And we ask ourselves, one: is it safe? And two: will it work for every single patient? If you check those boxes [then] you're a good candidate.

Laura: How does it compare to other forms of vision correction?

Dr. Wiley: With LASIK, we just treat the surface of the eye but we can also do procedures inside the eye, like exchange the lens in the eye, or we can even add a third lens, an implantable contact lens, to help you see better depending on the patient. So there are other options.

Laura: And what are the misconceptions that people might have about LASIK surgery?

Dr. Wiley: One is that it doesn't last long, that's not true. it lasts, consider it permanent. You've had yours for 25 years, still going strong.

Laura: Absolutely.

Dr. Wiley: Two, they say that eye surgeons don't get LASIK. We actually do, a lot of my colleagues across the country have had it and I've had it myself and it's been great. And three, people worry about losing vision or blindness with the procedure. Far less than one percent chance risk of anything serious going on because our screening and our safety profile is just so much more sophisticated these days to choose the right patients.

Laura: Right. If someone's interested in making an appointment, you work out of the Pineville and Steel Creek offices, how do they go about doing that?

Dr. Wiley: The easiest way to make an appointment with us is online all consultations are free of charge, of course, and then you can also call in.

Laura: Alright, Dr. Lee Wiley, thank you so much for all of the great information today we appreciate it. if you are interested in LASIK surgery, call the number on your screen to make an appointment or go to the website Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates. For The Daily Two, I'm Laura Palka.
