Lemons and pretzels are two of many foods to avoid with a sore throat

We’ve spoken several times in this blog about what you should eat and drink when you’re sick, but it’s just as important to know what you shouldn’t eat and drink, and why. Keep reading for a list of what foods to avoid with a sore throat.

What are foods to avoid with a sore throat?

There are many foods that you should avoid if you are dealing with a sore throat. Many are apparent but others may surprise you based on your current diet. You should:

Avoid alcohol and caffeine

Alcohol and caffeinated drinks like coffee are diuretics, meaning that they can potentially dehydrate you. As a result, your throat may become irritated and eventually sore. Consider abstaining from these drinks or opting for drinks with a lower alcohol or caffeine content.

Avoid salty foods

Similar to alcohol and caffeine, salt has dehydrating properties. However, salty foods can dry your mouth and throat, leading to irritation. Avoiding salty foods altogether is not preferable as sodium is an essential electrolyte, but moderating your salt intake while your throat is sore can prevent your symptom from becoming worse.

Avoid spicy foods

Spice has been used for common colds to act as a natural decongestant, but it could come at a cost. Some spicy foods, like chilis and hot sauces, will increase inflammation in your throat and make any relief you need from congestion not worth it. If you're dealing with a sore throat, it's best to avoid spicy foods or those with high capsaicin levels.

Avoid hard foods

Crackers, toast, raw vegetables and other hard foods can scratch your throat. While you won’t notice it when you’re healthy, a sensitive sore throat may feel pain. Consider skipping these foods entirely, taking smaller bites, or blending these ingredients for less irritation.

Avoid acidic foods

Citrus fruits are often recommended during sick days because of their vitamin C content, but there's a catch. The acids in lemons, oranges, and tomatoes can irritate your throat and make your discomfort worse. Consider alternative fruits if you're looking to maintain your daily fruit and vegetable intake.
