Couple playing video games while avoiding digital eye strain

For decades, video games have been a staple in households, enjoyed by people of all ages. While devices and content continue to evolve, one thing remains the same: prolonged, intense focus on screens.

What is digital eye strain?

Digital eye strain (also known as computer vision syndrome) occurs after prolonged exposure to screens, including computer monitors, TVs, smartphones, and VR/AR headsets.

One of the most common contributors to digital eye strain is playing video games for extended periods, sometimes for hours at a time.

What are symptoms of digital eye strain?

Common signs of digital eye strain include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Headaches
  • Dry eye
  • Eye fatigue

In fact, a recent study found that more than 50% of gamers surveyed experienced an eye-related issue or disorder.

How can you prevent digital eye strain while playing video games?

Digital eye strain is common, but it doesn’t mean you have to stop gaming altogether.

According to Dr. Lee Wiley, a CEENTA cataract and LASIK surgeon in Pineville and Steele Creek, “Our brains are evolutionarily designed to slow or stop our blinking when we are visually focused on something, whether it be the heat of battle in real life or in video games. This can lead to symptoms of dryness and fatigue and can be easily remedied by taking a few simple actions."

Use the 20-20-20 rule

Taking regular breaks is essential for eye health. The 20-20-20 rule recommends that every 20 minutes, you look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Wear blue light glasses

Gamers who enjoy long or competitive sessions may find it difficult to take frequent breaks. Blue light–filtering glasses can help reduce exposure to high-energy visible (HEV) blue light emitted from screens. While these glasses are not medically necessary to prevent eye damage, they can add comfort to your gaming experience if you are fatigued.

Keep a safe distance from your screen

High-action gameplay can cause you to lean closer to your screen. However, eye care professionals recommend keeping at least an arm’s length distance from your monitor or device to maintain proper visual comfort and contrast.

Keep your eyes lubricated

Dr. Wiley recommends additional measures to prevent dry eye. "Avoid fans blowing on your face, turn on a humidifier, or use preservative free eye drops if you suffer from dryness while gaming."
