INSTRUCTIONS FOR PATIENTS HAVING CANALITH REPOSITIONING/EPLEY MANEUVERS

IMPORTANT: If you have any of these problems, please discuss this with the doctor:

  1. High blood pressure

  2. A history of detached retina

  3. Neck and/or back problems

BEFORE THE EPLEY MANEUVERS

  1. You will be more comfortable if you limit yourself to a light meal no later than four (4) hours before the procedure.

  2. You will be more comfortable if you wear casual clothing. Slacks or pants are suggested.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The procedure is painless. The patient will lie down on an examining table, roll over, and move the head as directed. The movements are slow and gentle and the patient is assisted and supervised constantly during the positioning.

It is possible that some dizziness may occur right after the maneuvers, but this is temporary. A few patients may experience some nausea while the canaliths are being repositioned. All movements are completed in a safe and slow manner to minimize discomfort.

AFTER THE EPLEY MANEUVERS
Plan to have someone available to drive you home after the procedure. You may be dizzy for a short time after the procedure. Take it easy for the rest of the day.

ACTIVITY LIMITATIONS FOR THE FIRST 24 to 48 HOURS
You need to keep your head in an upright position to allow the canaliths to settle in the area of the labyrinth where they won't disturb your balance.

  1. Keep your head in a vertical plane. Do not tip your head up or down or bend over at the waist. For example, avoid appointments such as the hairdresser, dentist or barber. Do not bend over to brush your teeth, tie your shoes or use eye drops. Do not look down to read or write. You may use a cervical collar to keep you from tipping your chin down.

  2. Do not lie flat. Sleep in a recliner or propped up on several pillows, tilted back no further than 30 to 45 degrees. Keep your face straight forward.
ACTIVITY LIMITATIONS FOR THE NEXT THREE TO FOUR NIGHTS

Do not sleep on your ___ right ____ left side.

Your activities are not otherwise restricted. Move around as you wish.
