Allergy Symptoms

There are many different types of allergies out there, and yet allergy symptoms are often similar no matter what you’re allergic to. It doesn’t matter if it’s pollens or peanuts, mold or milk — you need to know what your allergy symptoms are so you can receive allergy treatment if necessary.

Itchy, watery eyes, rashes and congestion could be symptomatic of a mild allergic reaction. Itchiness and difficulty breathing are more moderate allergy symptoms. Anaphylaxis is a very serious allergic reaction in which the entire body is affected. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include itchiness of the eyes or face; swelling of the lips, tongue or throat; wheezing or difficulty breathing; abdominal pain; diarrhea; and mental confusion, anxiety or loss of consciousness.

If you or your child are prone to anaphylaxis, you should have a plan in place in case a severe allergic reaction occurs. The primary treatment for anaphylaxis is epinephrine (adrenaline).

Nearly every year, Charlotte is ranked as one of the worst cities in the nation for allergies (see our Charlotte allergies page). While it can be difficult to avoid allergens completely, you can rest easy knowing our trained Charlotte allergists can provide allergy testing after determining what you are allergic to.
